Manon Lescaut -- I want you to go see it

Writer's picture: undefined

In Sevilla you can go see a great opera by Giacomo Puccini at the Teatro de la Maestranza. The opera is titled Manon Lescaut and is divided into four acts based on a 1731 French novel. It's kind of trippy because it's an Italian opera based in France with French names and here it has English and Spanish subtitles. That only adds to how intriguing it is though. I promise.

Manon Lescaut is portrayed by soprano Ainhoa Arteta, a role that has been done by the likes of Maria Callas, Lescaut (the brother) is done by Vittorio Vitelli, and Des Grieux (not so wealthy boy) is portrayed by Walter Fraccaro and this role has been done by the late, great Luciano Pavarotti. If you have any interest in opera def go see it!

Without giving too much away, it's about a good love story gone wrong. Girl likes boy, boy likes girl, wealthy boy likes girl, wealthy boy gets girl, not so wealthy boy comes back that girl actually likes, not so wealthy boy and pretty, talented girl fall in love again, rich boy gets angry, and he has her sent away for being a prostitute to jail in Louisiana and now desperate, lonely, and sad boy goes after her to save...I'll leave you with that and a clippet:
