If you love food like I do, you'll randomly get the desire to make some of your faves at home. This happened when I wanted some HUMMUS. I looked up several recipes and noticed tahini as an essential ingredient in hummus. I was like what is tahini???
I searched a couple stores and was shocked at the price tag of a little container of tahini, $6 on average! I said no way! (Just with different words) So I did my homework to figure out what exactly is tahini. I saw one of my former professors in the store having the same issue so I thought "I need to post this now!"
Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds much like peanut butter. A light bulb went off. I just had to find some sesame seeds. They typical price tag for a jar of sesame seeds is around 4 dollars for about .6 oz of seeds in the Asian section. That's not enough to make a decent paste.
However, enter the health food store Earth Fare where you can buy bulk. Here, hulled sesame seeds are $4.49 per lb!
Do you know how light sesame seeds are!? I got half a pound for a little less than 2 bucks and it was a full cup's worth (pre-ground).
Ingredients:
1 cup or 1/2 lb sesame seeds 2-3 tbsp neutral oil (canola or vegetable)
THAT'S ALL FOLKS
Toast over low heat
$6.39 for 11.3 0z of Tahini at major grocer
HOW TO:
1. Toast 2. Process 3. Add oil 4. Process some more
Couldn't be easier! It makes 3/4 cup and lasts about a month in the fridge in an airtight container. Don't forget to label it!
Finished paste
